It’s been a long while coming but the beginning of the school holidays saw a group of staff and cadets head back up to the Lake District for a week of adventure training, fun and personal development.
The Air Cadets are lucky enough to have a dedicated Adventure Training Centre in Windermere, and Norfolk and Suffolk Wing were one of the first groups back after an extended closure due to the pandemic.
Forming their own ‘bubble’ on arrival the cadets were able to enjoy the week, which included walking in the local area, rock climbing and mountain biking through Grizedale Forest. They were also able to spend a day kayaking on Coniston water and completed a 150ft long abseiling into Cathedral Cave Quarry.
Cadet Finlay Allan from 1249 (Dereham) Squadron was attending a camp for the first time and loved the opportunity to get away and enjoy the opportunities available. He added ‘I love being outside and doing adventurous activities so couldn’t wait to put my name down to attend Windermere. I really enjoyed the mountain biking and ghyll scrambling where we could jump into the pools of water.”
Sqn Ldr Peter Howlett, Wing Adventure Training Officer said “It was not easy pulling this camp together especially with the restrictions we still have in place, but seeing the cadets throw themselves into all the activities on offer has been fantastic, and has made it all worthwhile.”
As well as giving the cadets the chance to try activities not usually accessible in East Anglia, a visit to one of our dedicated adventure training centres pushes the cadets both mentally & physically, building their confidence and resilience in the process.
